How To Enable The Hidden FaceTime Over 3G Feature In iOS 5

Although it’s rather disappointing that quite a few prospective new features of iOS 5 didn’t actually make the final cut, it’s always nice to find some of them tucked away – hidden in a secret bolt-hole for later ejection.

The trouble for Apple – and other creators of mobile operating systems is, once it nears completion, it’s easier to disable certain features rather than completely write them out, which often has implications on other elements of the software’s framework. So they hide it, sort out the main issues, and discreetly remove it when the time is right.
This makes it quite fun for those with a little free time and an eye for discovering hidden gems – such as the panoramic camera mode which Apple toyed with, but decided not to accompany the iPhone 4S 8 mega-pixel snapper with.
The latest unlockable discovery, which comes via FSM, is FaceTime over 3G – something which as long been achievable with jailbreak tweaks such as MiddleWhat and My3G amongst scores of others.
As usual, we’ve provided a very simple how-to, detailing how you can activate your iOS 5 device’s FaceTime over 3G capabilities. Unfortunately, it’s jailbreak only, and since the dual-core iPhone 4S and iPad 2 have yet to be exploited on Apple’s latest mobile OS, it’s pretty much restricted to the iPhone 4 since none pre-dating it have a front-facing camera.
Enable FaceTime Over 3G In iOS 5 (Natively):
Step 1: If you don’t already have it, purchase iFile through Cydia. It’s by far the simplest way to browse the contents of your device.
Step 2: Browse through to /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/
Step 3: Open the file named N90AP.plist

Step 4: Underneath
<key>capabilities</key>
<dict>
enter
<key>3Gvenice</key>
<true/>
whilst taking care not to leave any line spaces.

Step 5: You’re done – you can now enjoy FaceTime over 3G without having to use any third-party applications!
Continually adding tweaks to your device can sometimes be detrimental, with chances of freezes, crashes and the like obviously slightly increasing compared with stock. Thus, it’s better for everyone involved if Apple incorporates the features natively rather than edging consumers towards the alternatives found in Cydia.
In order to source the undercover feature, you will need a jailbroken iOS 5 device. For jailbreaking iOS 5 tethered using Redsn0w, you can follow our complete step by step guideposted here, or here if you want to use Sn0wbreeze on Windows. Since jailbreak on iOS 5 is currently limited to tethered boot only, you can install ‘SemiTether’ patch (instructions here) from Cydia to make your jailbreak semi-tethered on iOS 5. For those of you on iOS 5.0.1 can follow our instructions posted here on how to jailbreak using Redsn0w or here using Sn0wbreeze.

How to Use Redsn0w to Jailbreak iOS 5.0.1

Requirements
  • A supported iOS device: iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 1, iPod touch 3rd or 4th gen – there is currently no support for iPad 2 or iPhone 4S
  • iOS 5.0.1 installed already or use the OTA update if you haven’t already
  • The previous iOS 5 IPSW for the device
  • Redsn0w 0.9.9b8 – get it for Mac or grab it for Windows
The jailbreaking process will be familiar to anyone who has done this before or who has used a custom IPSW. The main thing to remember here is that you are pointing at the older IPSW file despite running a newer version of iOS, this will continue to be the case until a new version of redsn0w is released to circumvent that aspect of the procedure.

Jailbreaking iOS 5.0.1 with Redsn0w

  • Turn the iOS device off and then connect it to the computer
  • Launch Redsn0w and click the “Extras” button, then click on “Select IPSW” – locate the iOS 5 IPSW (not iOS 5.0.1) and click “Open”
  • Click “Back” to return to the original Redsn0w screen and click on “Jailbreak” as usual
  • Put the iOS device in DFU mode as redsn0w instructs, holding down the Power and Home button for 10 seconds, then release the power button but continue to hold the Home button for another 15 seconds or so
  • As the jailbreak works, the iPhone/iPad/iPod will reboot and you’ll get a notification that it requires a tethered boot, let the device boot up as usual and then put the hardware into DFU mode yet again so you can perform the tethered boot and get Cydia to work
  • Back in Redsn0w, go to “Extras” and select the iOS 5.0 IPSW again, then click on “Just Boot” at the top of the “Extras” menu to perform the tethered boot
  • Enjoy your jailbreak
If you have a white Cydia icon it’s because you didn’t perform a tethered boot properly, so just go through that step again and you’ll be fine. From this point it’s recommended to install the semi-tether since it improves the experience, it’s a free download from the Cydia store.
If all of this seems confusing or causes a headache, just wait until a new version of redsn0w is available or better yet wait for the untether.

How To Enable Android-Like Autocorrect Keyboard Hidden In iOS 5 (No Jailbreak Required)

A new feature found in iOS 5 allows you to enable android-like autocorrect keyboard. The method doesn’t require jailbreak and it’s similar to the one of the panorama camera mode.

You’ll need to do a backup for your date via iTunes. Just connect your device into your computer, open iTunes and right click on the iPhone icon then hit backup. Now let’s do it.
STEP 1: Get iBackupBot which can be found here.
STEP 2: Locate your backup from iBackupBot and then find Library/Preferences/com.apple.keyboard.plist.
STEP 3: Open the file and add the below code:

<key>KeyboardAutocorrectionLists</key><string>YES</string>

STEP 4: Save the file and close iBackupBot.
STEP 5: Finally, open iTunes and right click on the icon then hit Restore from Backup and select the backup you edited.
NOTE: For jailbreakers, you can use SSH method better as it won’t need you to restore from backup. You know how to do it!
The iPhone will reboot (and you’ll of course need tethered boot if its jailbroken). You’ll be able to use the awesome autocorrect feature
