Top Must-Have Widgets For iOS 5 Notification Center

Before the belated introduction of Siri, Notification Center was the main talking point of Apple’s much improved operating system for mobile devices – iOS 5. Although the voice-recognition software is marvelous and all, the improved notification infrastructure has to go down as the prized feature of what is (besides the battery issues) a very well put together update.

The developers have been hard at work updating Cydia tweaks for use with iOS 5, as well as bringing modifications for the brand-new features. The Notification Center has a whole bunch of handy tweaks rendering it even more useful and productive than the stock offering. We’ve covered many of them here at Redmond Pie, and, since it’s the weekend, we’re taking the opportunity to round up the ones we most recommend.
1. QuickMemo
One of the main issues with iOS (and often, mobile operating systems in general), is not necessarily a lack of features, but the time consumed in getting to them. The camera, for example, now has a nice handy button on the lockscreen – meaning you won’t miss the moment as you scramble around looking for the camera icon.
QuickMemo follows a similar motif. Making a quick note can often take a lot longer than it should, since you’ve to source where you’ve put your notes app, and often, once you’ve found it, you’ve forgotten some – if not all – of what you initially wanted to write down. QuickMemo adds a little scratchpad to your Notification Center for incredibly easy access, meaning you’ll never forget those little mental notes again.

For more information and instructions, see here
2. WeeKillBackground
This handy little add-on allows you to quickly and effortlessly kill your backgrounded apps, freeing up that oh-so-precious memory for more important tasks ahead.

It’s rather unfortunate that Apple hasn’t implemented some form of ability to close apps in their bunches. After all, if, like me, you’ve hundreds on your device, you probably don’t enjoy the rigmarole of shutting them down one at a time. Luckily, the jailbreak devs are one step ahead, and you can see more of WeeKillBackground here.
3. FavoriteContacts
Similarly to QuickMemo, it takes a central feature of your device and brings it to the Notification Center for easy access. In the average person’s address book app, there will likely be hundreds of entries, but most are seldom contacted and simply make up numbers.

FavoriteContacts lets you take your most valued (or simply most contacted), and give them pride of place in the Notification Center – making the process of calling or messaging your most frequented contacts a complete doddle.
Very useful, and one that I have personally been using since we first reported on it here.
4. BBSettings
As most jailbreakers would probably vouch, SBSettings is the single most useful tool once the Cupertino handcuffs have been breached. A simple slide across the top brings every key element of connectivity (as well as additional other toggles) all in one place.

Dubbed the ‘Ultimate’ Notification Center tweak, BBSettings brings this to the Notification Center, allowing very easy access to the very important components of your device. For a full overview and download, see here.
One also worth a small mention is WeeSearch. Despite currently having more than its fair share of bugs, it’s a very worthy entrant  to our list. It allows you to quickly search three of the Web’s main sites (Google, YouTube and Wikipedia) right from the convenience of your Notification Center. Unfortunately, it’s currently let down by not having the ability to use spaces in searches, but definitely worth keeping an eye on, since updates can easily amend such issues. For more info, check this post.
It’s certainly a positive move that developers behind Cydia Apps and tweaks have made a beeline for the Notification Center. Being the central component to all of the devices activities, it presents the perfect breeding ground for many useful tweaks – making the whole experience faster, easier, and altogether more productive.
Let’s hope the trend of developing Notification Center-based apps continues to thrive!
In order to install any of the tweaks in today’s round-up, you will need a jailbroken iDevice running iOS 5. All devices barring the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S can be jailbroken tethered using Redsn0w, For jailbreaking iOS 5 tethered using Redsn0w, you can follow our complete step by step guide posted here, or here if you want to use Sn0wbreeze on Windows. Since jailbreak on iOS 5 is currently limited to tethered boot only, you can install ‘SemiTether’ patch (instructions here) from Cydia to make your jailbreak semi-tethered on iOS 5. For those of you on iOS 5.0.1 can follow our instructions posted here on how to jailbreak using Redsn0w orhere using Sn0wbreeze.

SIRI CYDIA APP – MOST AWAITED CYDIA APP

20110802-012121.jpg

So you have your iPhone 4, 3GS and you can install thousands of apps from AppStore. What’s all this commotion about jailbreaking? Why would you need to jailbreak? What does it offer?

Why Not Appstore:
Simply put, Apple’s rules for AppStore are way too limiting. The apps listed in the sections below are not possible to be in AppStore since they break one or more of Apple’s rules. These rules keep control of the iPhone platform in Apple’s control. Some of these rules include: patching system files such as SpringBoard, allowing apps to run in the background, running apps out of the “sandbox”, and simply doing things Apple decided that they don’t want you to do often for reasons to their benefit, not yours (such as tethering).
But most awaited Cydia App is CYDIA SIRI APP. Why?
Apple released new excellent voice service SIRI. SIRI the intelligent assistant that helps you get things done. All you have to do is ask. But. SIRI INTELLIGENT ASSISTANT working only on iPhone 4S. But. A lot of people have iPhone 4, 3GS or iPod touch.
And now we think – Siri alternative app for iPad 2, iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS coming soon. 60000000 iDevices waiting this Big community – big money. SIRI APP – The intelligent assistant App.. SIRI APP in CYDIA STORE is real.
SIRI APP in CYDIA STORE allows you to search on various subjects including conversions, art, literature, history, and biology. You can ask it “What is a Jailbreak ?” and it will reply with a paragraph from Wikipedia focusing on our finned friends.

Hacker Creates Siri Proxy Server To Easily Add New Functionality (VIDEO)

You must have seen the news about that Applidium could crack down Siri’s security protocol so
that you can run it on any non-iPhone 4S device, even Android devices.
The hack also allows developers to develop their own apps and include
Siri inside it.

So,
thanks to Applidium hack, a hacker today created a proxy server
for Siri and named it Siri Proxy. He says that the idea behind the proxy
server is to make it easy for developers to add limitless functionality
to Siri.
The hacker, known as plamoni on Twitter, released the
source code of the Siri Proxy along with the instructions to set it up
on the popular social coding site GitHub.
Moreover,
he demonstrated a plugin he created with custom handles that allows him
to control his thermostat from his iPhone. Commands such as ”What’s the
status of the thermostat?”, “Set the thermostat to 68 degrees”, or even
“What’s the inside temperature?” are showed in the video

Interestingly, this hack doesn’t require jailbroken device:
I’m the creator of this particular hack, and I can assure you, it doesn’t require the iPhone to be jailbroken. My iPhone 4S is not jailbroken. The only action I needed to take on my iPhone was to install my fake Root CA. Which you can do without jailbreaking. Everything else is done outside of the phone, so it requires no jailbreaking or code to be placed on the phone itself.
The hacker mentioned that this won’t allow you to get Siri on other devices. It just allows you to add your own functions to Siri.

How To Unlock iPhone 4S On Any Carrier [Guide]

Just after Apple released iPhone 4S from some time, users began asking about unlock for iPhone 4S, and since that users haven't got any word from the Dev Team blog about Ultrasn0w about if it is going to unlock iPhone 4S to work on any carrier or not, so that we have got some good news that all users want it just after the jump:

Thankfully some guys at MacRumors forum have got a way that will unlock your iPhone 4S without needing to use Gevey SIM or Ultrasn0w tool and also no jailbreak required, you can follow this steps and after it you will unlock your iPhone:
Insert original carrier AT&T SIM card
Dial 611 for AT&T customer service hotline and drop the call
Turn on Airplane Mode
Take out AT&T SIM card
Insert T-Mobile SIM card
Make sure WiFi is off ( also tap on ‘Forget this Network” to make sure it doesn’t connect automatically later)
Switch off Airplane Mode and iPhone will search for network. This is followed by the Apple splash screen appearing.
Activation Required will be displayed on the screen
EDGE network will activate automatically – notice the ‘E’ on the top left corner of the screen
Wait for about 20-30 seconds and turn off the phone
Turn on iPhone and the same Activation Required screen will be displayed
When you see one signal bar, tap on Use Cellular Connection

Downgrade iOS 5.0.1 To 4.3.3, 4.3.5 On iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad 2/1, iPod touch [How To Tutorial]

iOS 5.0.1 has been released -  and, chances are, you may be looking to downgrade to an earlier version of iOS because of one reason or another. Today, we’re going to guide you on how to do exactly that so you can go back to whichever version of iOS you are comfortable with.

Before you continue, though, keep in mind that you can only downgrade if you have previously backed up SHSH blobs for whichever version of iOS (4.x and below only) you wish to downgrade to. This is because of certain security checks used by Apple to ensure people stick to the latest version of iOS. It is also important to note that as of this writing, iOS 5.0 firmware is still being signed. You can downgrade to iOS 5.0 as long as it is being signed by Apple. The moment Apple stops signing iOS 5.0, you wont be able to downgrade to it even if you have SHSH blobs saved for it. This applies to iOS 5.x only, explanation for which can be found here.
NOTE: This guide is not applicable for iPhone 4S since there is no public jailbreak available for it, yet.
Step 1: Download the version of iOS to which you wish to downgrade to:
Step 2:  Connect your iOS device with your computer via USB cable. Boot into Device Firmware Update (DFU) mode. To do this, you will need to first turn off your device, press and hold Power + Home buttons for about 10 seconds, release the Power button while holding Home button for an extra 10 seconds. You’ll know when you’re in DFU mode, this is when the screen will gocompletely blank.
Step 3: Navigate to Windows > System 32 > drivers > etc on Windows or just etc on OS X. Locate a file named hosts, make a backup copy of it and then open it up with a text editor.

Step 4: Add the following code to hosts and save the file:
74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com

Step 5: Open up iTunes and choose your iOS device from the sidebar. While holding the Shift(on Windows) or Alt (on OS X) key, click on Restore and choose the firmware file you downloaded in Step 1.
Step 6: You may receive Error 10xx after doing this, but there is no need to worry about it.

You must download a program like TinyUmbrella or Fix Recovery, open it up and click on Exit Recovery to get out of the error.

That’s it!
If you followed the steps correctly, your device will now be downgraded from iOS 5.0.1 to the firmware of your choice. You now may want to jailbreak your device on whichever firmware you chose: use JailbreakMe 3.0 if you’re on iOS 4.3.3 for untethered jailbreak, or tethered jailbreak using Redsn0w if you’re on iOS 4.3.5. iOS 5.0 can also be jailbroken tethered, or semi-tetheredusing Redsn0w.
Last but not the least, make sure you revert the changes you made to hosts file in Step 4above to start receiving future iOS updates normally in iTunes from Apple’s servers.

iOS 5.0.1 For iPhone, iPad, iPod touch Can Be Jailbroken Using Redsn0w [How-To Tutorial]

Hot on the heels of the developer release, Apple has just released the first of presumably many updates to iOS 5 – dubbed as iOS 5.0.1 – and just like that, it’s jailbroken!

We have tested and can confirm that the latest version of Redsn0w can tether-jailbreak the just released iOS 5.0.1 on iPhoneiPad, and iPod touch. Unfortunately, the jailbreak is indeed tethered (as you might have guessed), but on the bright side, the ‘SemiTether’ patch continues to work through to this latest version, so your device will boot, but unfortunately will not function to a satisfactory degree until you connect to a Redsn0w yielding PC or Mac. More details are available at the bottom of this page.
For all the benefits attainable through jailbreak, we certainly feel that a tethered or semi-tethered jailbreak is better than no jailbreak at all – wouldn’t you agree?
The latest release of Redsn0w works (as reliably as clockwork) to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1. The following is a tutorial detailing how to perform a successful tethered jailbreak using redsn0w.

iPhone 4 GSM, jailbroken on iOS 5.0.1
Important things to consider:
  • This doesn’t work with the dual-core iPad 2 or iPhone 4S devices. Those running an iPad 2 on 4.3.3 can jailbreak using JailbreakMe 3.0.
  • iPhone 4SiPad 2, and iOS 5 users on other devices are advised to stay away from iOS 5.0.1 if they want untethered jailbreak.
  • If you use GEVEY to unlock, skip to the bottom of the tutorial
  • As mentioned above, this is tethered or semi-tethered, so prepare for a considerable amount of booting.
With that out of the way, let’s begin!
Step 1: Download the latest version of iTunes (10.5) for Windows or Mac from this link.
Step 2: Back your iDevice up through iTunes. We’re not expecting anything to go majorly wrong – it’s just a precautionary measure.
Step 3: Update your device to iOS 5.0.1.
Step 4: Download the latest version of Redsn0w for Windows or Mac.
Step 5: Run Redsn0w. Select “Extras”, followed by “Select IPSW”, and point it to the iOS 5.0 firmware file, which can be downloaded from this link. Select the appropriate firmware file tailored for your iDevice.

Step 6: Then hit "Jailbreak", and select "Install Cydia". Follow the steps through DFU mode, and then Redsn0w will apply the jailbreak.

How-To Boot Tethered:
Step 7: Once everything is complete, you will need to boot tethered. Launch Redsn0w, select "Extras", followed by "Just Boot". You will need to perform this action every time your device is switched off or rebooted.

Booting Semi-Tethered (Optional)
After testing, we can confirm that the "SemiTether" patch is alive and kicking on iOS 5.0.1. As stated, it allows you to boot your device, but with limited use of features, so you will have to boot from computer in order to get your device working perfectly again. It’s free, and you can grab it over at the BigBoss repo: http://thebigboss.org/semitether. You can follow the complete instructions posted here on how to download and install SemiTether on your iOS device.

For Unlockers Only:
If you unlock your iPhone 4 using a GEVEY SIM interposer, you’ll need to create a custom .IPSW, which will preserve your baseband.
To achieve this, open Redsn0w, select "Extras", then "Custom IPSW", then point Redsn0w to your iOS 5.0.1 file, and let Redsn0w do the rest.
Finally, enter pwned DFU mode (Extras > Pwned DFU) and restore to your custom firmware via iTunes. Once complete, you’ll be able to unlock your device with GEVEY once more.

How To Enable The Hidden FaceTime Over 3G Feature In iOS 5

Although it’s rather disappointing that quite a few prospective new features of iOS 5 didn’t actually make the final cut, it’s always nice to find some of them tucked away – hidden in a secret bolt-hole for later ejection.

The trouble for Apple – and other creators of mobile operating systems is, once it nears completion, it’s easier to disable certain features rather than completely write them out, which often has implications on other elements of the software’s framework. So they hide it, sort out the main issues, and discreetly remove it when the time is right.
This makes it quite fun for those with a little free time and an eye for discovering hidden gems – such as the panoramic camera mode which Apple toyed with, but decided not to accompany the iPhone 4S 8 mega-pixel snapper with.
The latest unlockable discovery, which comes via FSM, is FaceTime over 3G – something which as long been achievable with jailbreak tweaks such as MiddleWhat and My3G amongst scores of others.
As usual, we’ve provided a very simple how-to, detailing how you can activate your iOS 5 device’s FaceTime over 3G capabilities. Unfortunately, it’s jailbreak only, and since the dual-core iPhone 4S and iPad 2 have yet to be exploited on Apple’s latest mobile OS, it’s pretty much restricted to the iPhone 4 since none pre-dating it have a front-facing camera.
Enable FaceTime Over 3G In iOS 5 (Natively):
Step 1: If you don’t already have it, purchase iFile through Cydia. It’s by far the simplest way to browse the contents of your device.
Step 2: Browse through to /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/
Step 3: Open the file named N90AP.plist

Step 4: Underneath
<key>capabilities</key>
<dict>
enter
<key>3Gvenice</key>
<true/>
whilst taking care not to leave any line spaces.

Step 5: You’re done – you can now enjoy FaceTime over 3G without having to use any third-party applications!
Continually adding tweaks to your device can sometimes be detrimental, with chances of freezes, crashes and the like obviously slightly increasing compared with stock. Thus, it’s better for everyone involved if Apple incorporates the features natively rather than edging consumers towards the alternatives found in Cydia.
In order to source the undercover feature, you will need a jailbroken iOS 5 device. For jailbreaking iOS 5 tethered using Redsn0w, you can follow our complete step by step guideposted here, or here if you want to use Sn0wbreeze on Windows. Since jailbreak on iOS 5 is currently limited to tethered boot only, you can install ‘SemiTether’ patch (instructions here) from Cydia to make your jailbreak semi-tethered on iOS 5. For those of you on iOS 5.0.1 can follow our instructions posted here on how to jailbreak using Redsn0w or here using Sn0wbreeze.

How to Use Redsn0w to Jailbreak iOS 5.0.1

Requirements
  • A supported iOS device: iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 1, iPod touch 3rd or 4th gen – there is currently no support for iPad 2 or iPhone 4S
  • iOS 5.0.1 installed already or use the OTA update if you haven’t already
  • The previous iOS 5 IPSW for the device
  • Redsn0w 0.9.9b8 – get it for Mac or grab it for Windows
The jailbreaking process will be familiar to anyone who has done this before or who has used a custom IPSW. The main thing to remember here is that you are pointing at the older IPSW file despite running a newer version of iOS, this will continue to be the case until a new version of redsn0w is released to circumvent that aspect of the procedure.

Jailbreaking iOS 5.0.1 with Redsn0w

  • Turn the iOS device off and then connect it to the computer
  • Launch Redsn0w and click the “Extras” button, then click on “Select IPSW” – locate the iOS 5 IPSW (not iOS 5.0.1) and click “Open”
  • Click “Back” to return to the original Redsn0w screen and click on “Jailbreak” as usual
  • Put the iOS device in DFU mode as redsn0w instructs, holding down the Power and Home button for 10 seconds, then release the power button but continue to hold the Home button for another 15 seconds or so
  • As the jailbreak works, the iPhone/iPad/iPod will reboot and you’ll get a notification that it requires a tethered boot, let the device boot up as usual and then put the hardware into DFU mode yet again so you can perform the tethered boot and get Cydia to work
  • Back in Redsn0w, go to “Extras” and select the iOS 5.0 IPSW again, then click on “Just Boot” at the top of the “Extras” menu to perform the tethered boot
  • Enjoy your jailbreak
If you have a white Cydia icon it’s because you didn’t perform a tethered boot properly, so just go through that step again and you’ll be fine. From this point it’s recommended to install the semi-tether since it improves the experience, it’s a free download from the Cydia store.
If all of this seems confusing or causes a headache, just wait until a new version of redsn0w is available or better yet wait for the untether.

How To Enable Android-Like Autocorrect Keyboard Hidden In iOS 5 (No Jailbreak Required)

A new feature found in iOS 5 allows you to enable android-like autocorrect keyboard. The method doesn’t require jailbreak and it’s similar to the one of the panorama camera mode.

You’ll need to do a backup for your date via iTunes. Just connect your device into your computer, open iTunes and right click on the iPhone icon then hit backup. Now let’s do it.
STEP 1: Get iBackupBot which can be found here.
STEP 2: Locate your backup from iBackupBot and then find Library/Preferences/com.apple.keyboard.plist.
STEP 3: Open the file and add the below code:

<key>KeyboardAutocorrectionLists</key><string>YES</string>

STEP 4: Save the file and close iBackupBot.
STEP 5: Finally, open iTunes and right click on the icon then hit Restore from Backup and select the backup you edited.
NOTE: For jailbreakers, you can use SSH method better as it won’t need you to restore from backup. You know how to do it!
The iPhone will reboot (and you’ll of course need tethered boot if its jailbroken). You’ll be able to use the awesome autocorrect feature
